5 tips for tackling hair loss

In modern-day society, we place a lot of importance on our appearance, and that includes our hair. Strong, healthy-looking hair is ideal, but it’s important to remember that hair loss is an extremely common occurrence. By the age of 50, about every 2nd man is affected by involuntary hair shedding.

If you’re struggling to accept thinning hair or hair loss, you’re not alone, and it can take a real toll on your confidence and self-esteem. Luckily, you’re not completely powerless in this situation – keep reading to learn how to fight back!

Can you avoid hair loss?

Most often, hair loss is connected to hereditary factors. Have a look at family pictures: if a lot of your male relatives have hair loss, it’s more likely to happen to you as well. Usually, hair loss that’s linked to genetics appears as a slowly receding hairline or thinning at the crown of the head.

There are, however, other factors that can play a role in hair loss, and if you’d like to avoid costly procedures like transplants or laser treatments, certain lifestyle changes can also help you retain your hair or reduce hair shedding.

Give up smoking

This might be a tough one to hear if you’re a smoker: people who smoke are more likely to experience hair loss. One 2020 study with 1000 participants concluded that most of the smokers experienced some degree of hair loss, compared with less than half of the non-smoking participants.**

Decompress with a scalp massage

Massaging the scalp feels incredible, but that’s not all: it also stimulates hair follicles and may help improve hair thickness and growth. This requires no special products – simply press your fingers against your scalp firmly and gently and massage for a minimum of 5 minutes per day.

Eat well

This one is obvious – stick to a balanced diet full of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, unsaturated fats, and lean proteins. Try to limit your intake of sweets and make sure to stay hydrated. Not only can healthy dietary habits contribute to your overall well-being, but diet also plays an important role in the health of your hair.

Certain vitamins and minerals are especially important, so focus on these food groups:

  • Iron-rich food (beans, leafy greens, iron-fortified grains, eggs)
  • Food rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, mackerel, tuna, flax seeds, egg yolks, hemp seeds, walnuts)
  • High-protein food (eggs, lean meats, seafood)

Take a long hard look at your stress levels

Stress has long been cited as one of the possible contributing factors to hair loss. Studies suggest that significant amounts of stress (long-term or short-term), which trigger increased cortisol levels, can deter the normal activity of hair follicles and thus lead to hair loss.**

While we can’t completely avoid stress altogether, we can employ some coping strategies like:

  • Regular physical activity
  • Meditation
  • Resting and getting sufficient sleep
  • Focusing on relaxing hobbies
