Tips for fighting carbs

How to fight carbs?

We know, we know… There is a lot of information out there about carbohydrates, and it can be hard to figure out what’s accurate. Can carbs cause us to gain weight? Should we eliminate carbs entirely if we’re trying to slim down? But if we work out regularly, we need them to provide fuel, right?

We wanted to provide a helpful guide to answer these questions and more, so keep reading to learn all you need to know about carbs!

What are carbs?

Along with protein and fats, carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients found in food and drink. Their main purpose is to provide fuel for our bodies. The three main categories of carbohydrates are sugars, starches, and fibre.

Most carbs are transformed into glucose in our bodies, which is then used for energy. A portion of consumed carbs gets stored in the form of fat. The exception here is fibre – it doesn’t provide energy directly; instead, it feeds the beneficial bacteria in our gut and gets used to produce fatty acids, which some cells use as energy.

Good carbs and bad carbs

Here’s the kicker – while we often hear about how our carb-full guilty pleasures can lead us to gain weight, not all carbs are actually bad! Carbs can be divided into two groups: whole (complex) and refined (simple) carbs.

Whole carbs are loaded with nutrients and fibre, fill us up without blood sugar spikes, and can improve metabolic health. Refined carbs, on the other hand, can cause elevated blood sugar levels and consequently increased cravings, resulting in weight gain.

Why do we crave them, and how can we cut back??

Sweets, bread, pasta, sugary drinks… Refined carbs are what we reach for when we want comfort or when we want to reward ourselves. Because we associate them with positive emotions and because they can increase serotonin levels in our bodies and make us feel happier, carb cravings can be incredibly difficult to ignore.

Here are some tips for when those cravings hit:

1. Go for the right kind of carbs

Avoid refined carbs like sugary beverages, white bread, pastries, and anything made with white flour. Whole carbs, like vegetables, quinoa, barley, legumes, potatoes, whole grains, oats, and beans, will help fill you up for longer and without the blood sugar spike.

If you need snacking alternatives, we suggest nuts, cheese, and eggs – these are all great sources of both carbs and protein.

2. Avoid sugary drinks

Often when we’re feeling hungry, we’re actually just thirsty and have mixed up the signals that our body is sending us. Staying hydrated is incredibly important, but instead of reaching for your favourite sugary drinks, we suggest sparkling flavoured water or cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice. If fruit juices are a major feature in your diet, swap them out for fresh fruit instead.

3. Distract yourself

Keep yourself busy with your favourite hobbies, try some exercise, and especially take time out and avoid stressors that might lead you to reach for your comfort food. Breathing exercises or meditation can help you keep a cool head in moments of crisis.

4. Make sure to catch those ZZZs

Lack of sleep can cause us to crave higher-calorie food throughout the day and can even affect our hunger hormones. Aim for approximately 7 hours of sleep per night to keep your body in perfect balance.

5. Find what works for you

Going cold turkey and strictly avoiding all “bad” carbs might make you obsess over all the food you can no longer have. Take it to step by step, and don’t be too hard on yourself! Swap out sugary drinks for something healthier first, then eliminate other sweets, and so on.
